Laura, from London, talks to us about her family’s “cut out kids” project. Let’s take a closer look…

What did you do?

We used a roll of lining paper that we had spare and simply rolled it out, drew around the children and cut them out. (For bigger children you may need to tape together two pieces of paper.) Use some sellotape to stick down to the floor and let the children decorate.

The paper was very curled up so it was hard to keep flat. I would recommend backing with card or using sticks to keep the limbs straight.

What’s your next project idea?

I’ll be making a homemade piñata for my son’s 6th birthday.

Brief background about you

My name is Laura. I’m a 39-year-old Mum to three sons: aged 11, 9, and 5. We live in London, England.

How are you finding being housebound with kids so far?

It has had its challenges during the lockdown. The hardest part is trying to divide my attention fairly between all 3 children.  My almost 6 years old needs a lot of one on one and will quite happily scream the house down if he doesn’t get what he wants.  I have found that doing these kinds of activities together as a family help and engage them all.  We’re very fortunate to have a lovely garden space and we like to play games and have fun when the weather is nice.  I have even made them a garden swing which they are loving!

Any tips to help people when they are housebound with kids?

Don’t put pressure on yourself or your children.  Take each day as it comes. Be relaxed.  Remember to take time for YOU!  Your children will remember this time for the fun you had, not the school work they were forced to do when they weren’t ‘in the mood’.

It’s a great way to see what other families are doing to keep entertained.  You don’t need a never-ending budget and you’ll find most of the things can be done at home and adapted. Fun, fun, fun.
