Aradhana, from India, shows us how to make a kaleidoscope. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

We made DIY kaleidoscope with the available materials at home.

Materials needed:
Plastic sheet (OHP sheet)
White circle card to make designs and patterns on it
Sketch pens for decorating white card
Flexible straw
Tape

Methods:

1. First we colour the roll with poster colours and set it to dry.
2. We cut the OHP sheet into three equal strips and stick them together with tape leaving some space and finally joined them them all to make a triangular strips(which acts as a prism for reflection).
3. Then we put this triangular strips into the roll. It should fit into the roll accurately.
4. We made designs and patterns on the white circle card with sketch pens.
5. With any pointed nib make a hole in the centre of the card( I used pencil nib to make the hole).
6. Then put flexible straw into the hole of the circle and stick the straw onto the roll so that we can rotate the circle.
7. Our homemade kaleidoscope is ready to see the different designs it make due to reflection on the sheet.

For reflection mirrored sheet is advised but I used the OHP sheet And it worked the same like mirrored sheet.

Do you have any other projects planned?

I am planning to have some fun based physical activities for my kids as we all are housebound and confined to our own little space they need to do some movement within the space we have to make their mood and spirits high in this pandemic.

How are you finding being housebound so far?

Honestly it’s challenging to keep them busy in a constructive way but we are fully enjoying our quality time which we have got due to lockdown in India which we couldn’t get before because of tight schedules. We do lots of fun based activities like drawing.. crafting.. playing indoor , gardening and making new food together.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

We should try to keep our children in a protective environment mentally and physically too. We should put emphasis on both mental and physical fitness of our children. Happy surroundings help to make them feel secured in hard time.

Has this website and community helped you?

It is a great website. I always follow your feed on Instagram handle and always get ideas to keep my girls productively engaged.
