Christine, from Adelaide, South Australia, sent in this amazing craft, a galaxy in a jar! Read on to find our how to create your own little universe…

What did you do?

Do you ever stop and gaze at the night sky?
My kids and I decided to spend a week exploring it and here’s our next activity: universe in a jar! It’s actually a diy snow-globe but it’s just too good to only use at Christmas.
We put in: hair conditioner, baby oil, poster paints, glitter, water and mixed it all up really well. The oil and hair conditioner slow the movement down… it’s pretty cool! (If I do say so myself!)

Oil is sneaky and will leak if you don’t glue the thing shut properly.

Do you have any other projects planned?

We’re going to be doing some play setups about flowers, plants and trees!

How are you finding being housebound so far?

Bearable some days, amazing some other days.. it’s a real, eye-opening rollercoaster.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Have a plan! Even if it’s just a bank of ideas to fall back on. Use what you have. Use sensory play to calm and relax kids. Use small world play to get their imagination going. Ask for help- mums on Instagram are amazing with this. When all else fails: bicarbonate soda + vinegar OR a sink full of soapy water and spoons and cups.

Has this website and community helped you?

It’s a fantastic bank of curated food play ideas. All very doable and fun!
