When Lauren’s daughter couldn’t go to the escape room that was planned to celebrate her birthday, her mum brought the escape room to her! Let’s take a look…

What did you do?

My daughter, Lizzy, was really disappointed with the lead up to her birthday as she had been excited to go to a planned escape room birthday, which unfortunately couldn’t go ahead.

So I decided to bring it home with a hunt for the Krabby patty formula. I made a set of clues ranging from hunting puzzle pieces to put together, driving SpongeBob along a maze, hunting through Krusty crabs dollars in a shell and a pull out slip inside the computer Karen all set in the enemy’s chum bucket.

“it has made me realise – sometimes, the habits of doing big days out and birthday meals aren’t always needed and keeping it simple is just as good”

I made sure I had clues for each age so they could all get involved. Each clue revealed a letter. The end word was jellyfish of which I’d set a box filled with jelly with a jellyfish on. They had to stick their hand in and hunt for a key. The key opened up a lock on a clam with a few small gifts included water guns to play with for the rest of the day.

I added some blue balloons and shredded craft paper to create an underwater effect and printed and made the characters on cardboard so they would stand up.

I have just turned 30 myself and my husband Gary and I had planned a lovely break in Cornwall for the family from our home in Flintshire. So I have felt the disappointment myself in not being able to go, but we had a brilliant day having afternoon tea and good old fashioned party games.

My daughters: Lizzy age 12, cadence age 6, and Jessie Age 5 really enjoyed the birthdays and it has made me realise – sometimes, the habits of doing big days out and birthday meals aren’t always needed and keeping it simple is just as good.

How are you all managing in the house at the moment?

I’ve had a lot of positive and negative days during the stay at home period. I am finding that keeping a routine of some sort is best to, avoid the mind overthinking for both, me and the kids.

Amy tips for other families?

Avoiding any unnecessary news articles with opinions rather than facts has helped avoid the anxiety about the uncertainty that I’m sure a lot of us are feeling.

Any final thoughts?

I’m really loving the Housebound With Kids Facebook page and have tried lots of things like food colouring hair (which may have gone slightly wrong). After a play on the water slide I ended up with blue children! I also made paper mache elephants and bird feeders from milk cartons.
