Lydia walks us through a posting activity for 2-3-year-olds to teach them basic colour recognition, matching skills, memory skills and hand-eye coordination!

Instructions:

  1. Cut a slit in the side of a box and decorate it to look like a post box.
  2. Make simple coloured envelopes and cards with drawings or shapes to match the envelopes.
  3. Your child can match the pictures and colours into the envelopes and have fun posting the letters in a simple letterbox.

What’s your next project idea?

This activity can be extended for older children by doing letter, number and word recognition. For example, you can write an “A” on the envelope and they have to match the apple picture into the A envelope. etc.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Lydia. I have a 2-year-old girl and a 6-month-old girl. I am a Primary School teacher and live in South Africa.

How are you finding being housebound with kids so far?

I love being a stay at home mummy and it has forced me to be very creative in our lockdown situation with only a small garden and 2 bedroom flat to move around in.

Any tips to help people when they are housebound with kids?

My best tip is to create some sort of routine or schedule and stick to it! It will help you as the parent just as much as your child. Aim for one fun creative activity per day and keep the rest of your day as simple as possible. Kids thrive on boundaries and repetition!

Has the Housebound with Kids Facebook community helped you?

I am very new to it, but get so inspired by all the fun and creative ways people are dealing with this situation all over the world. It encourages me to know we are not alone.

What else could Housebound with Kids do to help more?

I think you are doing a fantastic job and I have started telling other teachers and parents about you!
