Checa, from Arizona, sent in this great idea. Let’s take a look in the mirror…

What did you do?

Every weekday morning, my kids wake up to a mirror covered in information. I include the weather, an affirmation, a fun fact and the National day, complete with Spanish translations! I draw to help convey the information while keeping my kids engaged and entertained. We also play our own game show where I quiz them about the content; “WHAT’S. ON. THAT. MIRROR?!!!!”, sound effects and everything! The winner gets a prize (money, snacks, anything I can find).

I’ve received so much interest that “Mirror Mom” was born. Every evening I publish “update cards” to help other parents get their mirrors updated too!

I originally started out with dry erase markers. They’re great to use but can be a little hard to see.  I later came across chalk markers and fell in love!  They gave my drawings a “POP” that I didn’t even know I was looking for!

Do you have any other projects planned?

After seeing my drawings, many people mention illustrating for children’s books. I believe it would be a realm I can succeed in.

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

My name is Checa, pronounced like the beginning of Czechoslovakia. My husband’s name is Ju’wan and we have 4 “adults in training”. Our son Zion is 15, our daughter Naima is 12, Valencia is 11 and our youngest son Ife is 2. We currently reside in sunny Arizona! My instagram is @mirror.mom

How are you finding being housebound so far?

It’s different, but we adapted and rose to the occasion considering learning starts at home. As soon as they mentioned schools might close, I made a curriculum that night. I wanted to prepare for the possibility of homeschooling. Everything’s been great, finding lots of teachable moments and more family time.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Even before quarantine, I’ve always lead with love when it comes to my parenting, patience is key! Patience and lots of snacks!

Has this website and community helped you?

It’s a great collection of amazing activities that definitely help to keep the kids busy.
