Kylie, from North Wales, sent in this great pebble pet idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

Making pebbles into pets. This is a great activity to do with children or even just by yourself. You’ll need palm sized pebbles/rocks, paint and varnish. I use acrylic paint/paint pens but any paint or pens will work. However acrylic paint holds up better in the elements if you are displaying the rocks outside.

Take a palm sized rock and decide what kind if pet you would like. There are lots of ideas on google, pinterest and even rock painting groups on Facebook. Love on the Rocks Uk is a great, friendly group.

The bee and ladybird are great starters. I start by base layering the rock with yellow or red. Then once completely dry add the black and so forth, gradually building the colours. It’s important to let each layer dry completely.

For the hedgehog I tried a different approach. I used paints and brushes rather than paint pens. I layered the front in grey and the back black. Once dry I added the ears and I drew the eyes in black, then using A very thin brush and white paint I flicked lines upwards to make the hair on the face. I continued with the same motions building colours up using beige and brown. Making sure each layer was dry first. Afterwards I painted on the nose. Using the same technique but in darker colours I did the back half of the hedgehog.

Sometimes the rocks decide what they would like to be. The duck was a perfect shape for a ducks head.

These are perfect shaped pebble pets to hold in the palm of your hand.

I find painting pebbles relaxing, but the children enjoy it too. I like that it is something that can be done as a family or by yourself.
