Louise, from UK, gives us the guide to her rainbow pinecone hanging decoration.  Lets take a look…

What did you do?

A really simple, fun activity that can be adapted and enjoyed by children of all ages!

First, find some pinecones! While you are out and about on walks, be on the look out for some pinecones. We collected 20+ and then chose our favourites to paint. We also gathered a few sticks as one is needed to attach the decorated pinecones to.

We wanted to create a rainbow pinecone decoration so my girls (3yr and 1yr) helped get the paint colours ready and mix the colours we didnt have. Then they painted and rolled the pinecones in all the paint. You could use any colours you like and you could go further with sequins/glitter etc.

Once the pinecones had dried, my eldest helped me cut different lengths of wool to tie the pinecones onto a stick. We spaced them out and kept the lengths varied and I tied them on (older children can do this independently)

Then find a space in your garden and display your beautiful creation!

Little tip – Before you start painting your pinecones, let then sit for a little while – we had a fair few wood lice crawl out of ours!!

My girls loved painting the pinecones so collect plenty as little ones will probably want to do several!

Watch out for wood lice hiding in the pinecones – check this first! Some of ours had loads!!

Pinecones are more open when the weather is warm and dry – this makes it easier to tie the wool round.

Do you have any other projects planned?

This was a big hit so I would like to use pinecones again with painting – rolling around the tuff tray or down the slide!

How are you finding being housebound so far?

It has been better than I anticipated and harder than I imagined! The days can be so long sometimes but the weeks have been flying by!

Relentless is a word I seem to use often lol but my girls are happy and we have made so many happy memories that will be cherished forever.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Keep things quick and simple – if your child isnt interested you havent lost anything and if they love it then it’s a real win!

Has this website and community helped you?

It is so good to have lots of ideas in one place – I like how easy it is to look through the tags that I am interested in.
