Rainbows play a big part in Kirsty’s family’s life in South Wales. Let’s find out how this beautiful and vibrant rolling pin rainbow artwork was made…

You will need:

  • Rolling Pin
  • Paint
  • Paper

Instructions:

  1. Put a blob of each colour of paint next to each other in a line on the paper.
  2. Put your rolling pin on top and roll.

It’s that simple!!

I used Crayola washable project paint but I’m sure any children’s craft/poster paints would work just the same.

I had some leftover wallpaper so used this instead of paper as it’s a little thicker than ordinary paper.

We also used a plastic mat on the floor underneath just incase of mess and spills but this was a surprisingly clean activity.

I’ll admit that I can’t remember the last time the rolling pin was actually used so I wasn’t too worried about it not cleaning up completely, but it actually washed just fine with hot soapy water. You could possibly cling film the rolling pin first but I haven’t tried this so not sure how well it would work.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Kirsty and I live in South Wales with my husband and children. We have 3 children. Sadly our first child Noah passed away at only a day old. Our two other children are called rainbow babies, which is a term used for a baby born after one has passed away, or been lost during pregnancy. Because of this rainbows have become a big part of our lives. We all love them in our house. Any chance to draw or paint and my daughter will do a rainbow.
I work for the NHS so seeing the rainbow everywhere at the moment as a sign of appreciation has been lovely.

My husband is also a Key Worker so we have juggled our working patterns around the children being at home. It can be very stressful indeed but we have found keeping calm together, making the most of the dry weather in the garden, and getting out for our daily walk is helping during this difficult time.

Any tips that may help other parents?

Staying at home with small children of any age can be a challenge. It’s important to try and find a balance that works for you, between homeschooling, having fun and having time for yourself too. Don’t push yourself to be a perfect parent. You already are!
