Katie, from Liverpool, shares her sand-foam messy play fun with us. Let’s take a look…

What did you do?

This was a lovely sensory messy experience! We mixed sand & shaving foam to make a gloopy wet substance! Using plastic ice cream cones the boys (4yo & 19mo) pretended to play ‘ice cream shops’ making ice creams for me (Mum).

They enjoyed asking what flavours and sprinkles I wanted. They then added some sequins, coloured rice & beads for sprinkles in our sandy ice creams!

This activity needed supervision due to my 20mo wanting to eat the sand and sprinkles. He responded well to modeling of the activity from me & his elder brother. It was great for role play, imaginative & imitation play. It was a lovely activity for us all to engage in together. They also loved watching the sand change form as I added and mixed in the shaving foam!

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

I’m Katie. I live in Liverpool UK with my husband, 2 beautiful & boisterous boys (A is 4years & Z is 20months) and our crazy Labradoodle. I am an EYFS & SEND specialist teacher. I love my job and being a mum. I have the best of both worlds!

How are you finding being housebound so far?

We have had a very active lockdown experience. It’s had it’s rough moments but I have kept us in a routine & busy with activities. We have also had our chill out days and have enjoyed having time together as a family. I feel the boys have bonded as brothers in a way that they would not have done so in our ‘normal’ life & routine so there is a silver lining. We are looking forward to seeing family again!

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Have a routine & stick to it. We found having a structure helped us be productive and my 4yo thrived from knowing what to expect from a day at home. We had a visual picture timetable so he knew what activities we were doing & when he had to do school work.

Having a garden and places for local walks really helped too as we never felt locked up inside!

Has this website and community helped you?

I love the range of activities on the website and ‘tried & tested’ tips from parents.
