Sam, from London, sent in this great ship making idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

We make amazing 3D models of olden day ships.
– Using paper art straws create the hull of the ship by using PVA glue and masking tape to create a semi circle shape with the straws.
– Using Paper mache or Mod-Roc cover the entire hull of the ship and allow to completely dry.
– Once dry, use a glue gun to glue two pieces of wood/sticks to make the masts
– Paint the ship in your desired colour, and once dry add any other details that you want.
– Use paper to cut out masts, and once decorated use a glue gun to stick them on.

This can be adapted for any kind of ship to suit any art project: Mayflower boats, tea clippers, Viking boats.

The children loved creating these ships and it was so easy. There is minimal adult supervision required (only the glue gun). It was a great problem solving activity as the children had to work out how big the hull and masts should be.
