Grace, from Hertfordshire, England, sent in this great arts and craft idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

Sensory tray creating a sunshine in the sky scene.
Blue dyed salt:
Add table salt and blue food colouring into a sandwich bag, tie the bag and shake vigorously until your salt is light blue
Stretchy dough sunshine:
Mix 2 cups water with 2 cups flour until you get a soft and stretchy dough. Mix in yellow food colouring until you have a bright yellow dough.

Children loved exploring the textures and mixing the salt and dough into a big mess!
Next time I’d have used liquid colour or pigment (I used gel) to dye the salt and left to dry overnight and it look a long time to get a good colour coverage! Children absolutely loved the open ended sensory exploration, I would do an activity like this again.

Do you have any other projects planned?

We have lots of projects on the go everyday! We love using cornflour to make ooblek and I’d like to introduce children to frozen ooblek next.

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

My name is Grace and I’m a childminder in Hertfordshire, England. I look after several children under 5 and work with an assistant part time. Since lockdown began, we’ve been unable to go on our usual outings so we’ve been finding new and exciting ways to enjoy activities at home!

How are you finding being housebound so far?

I’ve enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would! Not all children have returned to me so it may be because things are a little quieter but we’ve gone from daily outings to almost none and the children and I are loving it!

Do you have any tips for other parents?

If all else fails, get out in the garden with a pot of water!

Has this website and community helped you?

Such a great idea, love that there’s so many ideas easy to find in one place.
