Leona from Northern Ireland got a great reaction from the Housebound With Kids community when she shared this great idea!…

What did you do?

  1. Choose tissue paper colour(s)
    2. Place 2/3 sheets in a container
    3. Pour on half cup boiling water
    4. Wait for it to cool
    5. Either dip Ur hair in the coloured water for an ombre effect
    6. Or Use the coloured tissue to squish/sponge onto the hair that way you can get it to the roots.. wear gloves with this method.. it stains!!
    7. Dry and style your hair
    Simple!

Any tips to help anyone thinking of doing this themselves?

The colour will naturally stick to lighter hair in a few mins.. it will take much longer if you have a darker colour ..bear this in mind.

Washes out in 3-4 washes depending on your natural hair colour.

For my unicorn/rainbow colours I Randomly sectioned my hair and saturated each section with the colour using the tissue paper so I could get right to the root. Then moved on section by section. Dried and styled.  For anyone doing it this way, remember to wear old clothes, wear gloves and put an old towel down because it drips everywhere and stains.. once it’s dry it doesn’t stain!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your family…

My name is Leona. I’m from Portadown in Northern Ireland
I first saw this idea on the housebound with kids Facebook page.. but as I have 2 boys (14 and 4 years old) there was no way they would let me near their hair so I decided to do it on myself.

Being a self-employed nail technician and not an essential worker I, therefore, had the time in quarantine to mess around and sure if it messed up who would see it. 🤣 I first tried pink and purple and I loved it.. and it washed to a pastel pink.. then I tried purple on its own… loved it also.. started getting a bit confident.. so decided on the rainbow colours #supportthenhs

Yes, of course, my boys think their mum is just a little bit crazy but I could be doing a lot worse than colouring my hair I could be locking myself in the shed and drinking wine. 🤣 Which I have done.. 🤣

How are you coping with the current lockdown?

The quarantine/lockdown has been very tough. My husband is an essential worker (he strips at the door every night and goes straight to the shower) so it’s mostly just me and the kids every day on our own with the pets.

We have good days and bad days, highs and extreme lows.. screaming, tantrums, the world has ended kind of stuff and that’s just me.. 🤣

At the beginning of this, we were totally onboard with routine, the ‘at homeschooling’ and painting cute rainbows. Well, that went straight out the window by week 3.. and in return it’s.. sure son I have no problems with you drawing on the walls, I don’t care. Can I have ice-cream and chocolate custard for breakfast.. ‘yes, of course, you can, have 2 bowls!’

My teenager is sleeping until 3 pm every day, I don’t care he is our hero and is saving the world… 🤣 I straight-up praise all the mum and dad’s out there keeping it together and the ones that aren’t I’m with you but we will get back on track.

The Housebound with kids page has given me a lot of laughs and a little sneak peek into people lives also reading posts knowing I’m not the only one struggling helps greatly.. also some crafty ideas to do with the boys even though I end up doing them by myself. And also learned Tom Hardy has done another CBeebies bedtime story.. so we are on to a winner!

We will get through this, heads high, mamas n papas, we are all doing a fabulous job!!!
