Mirka talks us through this pretty twig light creation for the garden. Let’s find out more…

What did you do?

I had this idea when I was making a herb garden and had to remove this peculiar looking dead bush.

I ordered flower lights from eBay. That was the only real cost to make this for under £10, and I had quite a big old pot with nothing in it.

I always have a few wall paints knocking about as I often think of decorating, but weather has been too good to paint inside the house. I went to grab my brush by the side of the house only to find out the guy who comes to help with the garden has chopped it to pieces… I wasn’t too happy but took my 8-year-old daughter to the woods about 2 minutes where we live and I found just the perfect branch with lots of wiggly twigs on it.

Instructions:

First I painted the pot with polished pebble paint, and whilst that was drying, I got an old wicker basket left from mother’s day flowers and arranged the twigs inside it.

It needed a few stones to hold it down.

Next, I painted the twigs and gave everything a top coat to make it more weatherproof. My 14 year old helped me a little with painting but like with lots of teenagers, it was a very short-lived moment of togetherness.

When everything dried, I filled the pot with earth leftover from gardening, and arranged the basket with twigs on top of it. The lights finished everything so beautifully and it was really satisfying to watch it twinkling in the evening.

I think we all need a little project to keep us busy and happy, and many of us aren’t working so it’s great to get satisfaction from the little things around us.
