Ruth, and her son, had a “fruit and vegetable day”. Let’s take a closer look…

What did you do?

My son is five and full of energy with a short attention span. I tend to choose a daily theme and dot activities throughout the day, but also try to set up a carousel with a few tasks on the kitchen table.

For fruit and vegetable day, I started by showing him the pictures of Giuseppe Archimboldo and asking him to identify the different items used to make up the images.

I also read him some chapters from James and the Giant Peach.

For the carousel, I set up:

  • a parsnip with a triangle cut into it
  • a piece of cardboard, paints, brushes and water for paint-printing
  • a banana and a marker pen so he could write his name
  • a piece of cardboard and some fruit and vegetables so he could make his own Giuseppe Archimboldo ‘fruit face’
  • a mini garden kit with compost and seeds (cress, lettuce, radish and beetroot) for him to plant out.

Finally, I melted chocolate in a bowl and he dipped an apple with a lolly stick into the chocolate and rolled it in some extra treats (hundreds and thousands etc).

It was all very simple, but good fun.
