Krysia, from England, shares her adding seeds to the strawberry number activity.

What did you do?

This activity was set up to help with number recognition and counting with 1:1 correspondence.

I made a strawberry out of playdough, wrote the numbers 1-10 on some log slices and used black beans for the seeds.

To start with my 3 year old chose a log. I asked her what the number was and she had to use the beans to place the correct amount on the strawberry to make the seeds. We did this a couple of times but to hold her interest I changed it slightly. I then added some seeds to the strawberry and she had to count them and find the correct number on the log slice.

Finally, I put some seeds on the strawberry and asked my little one to take some away so there was only 1 left.

We used this activity for number recognition and counting but it could be used for recognising numbers beyond 10 or number bonds e.g. place 6 seeds on the strawberry and ask how many more to make 10 and other math based activities.

Because of my daughter’s age I changed the activity slightly as we went along to maintain her interest although the focus still remained on number recognition and counting.

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

I’m a mummy of 2 girls – one aged 3 and one aged 14 months. We live in England and when I’m not being a mummy I’m a primary school teacher.

How are you finding being housebound so far?

We’ve made some lovely memories during lockdown although it hasn’t been easy. Our daily play ideas have played a massive role in keeping the girls occupied and having fun whilst we haven’t been able to visit our usual places.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Where possible get outside and enjoy nature – even in the rain! Our love of outdoors is such an important part of our lives.

Has this website and community helped you?

A great way to share and gain ideas.
