Gemma and family, from Cornwall, made this fantastic castle out of cardboard. You can’t get better than a big cardboard box, can you!

Tell us about it…

This is very simple to do. Took about an hour with a little helper.

What you will need:

  • large box
  • duct tape
  • double sided tape
  • pen knife/something to cut card (i don’t need to mention be super careful using around children and don’t leave it about)
  • stick
  • paint for the flag(we did a Cornish flag)
  • pencil
  • book/2020 diary (may as well put it to good use😂) to draw around

What i did!

  1. Firstly i cut the flaps of the box and put them to the side.
  2. Turn the box up side down and pencil the shape of the door. score only the top of the door arch so the doors are still attached. then score down the centre so the doors open. i did score down the back of the doors so they would open out easier, but not all the way through the card. use 4 bits of duct tape to create the hinges.
  3. Cut out the peep hole in the top of the box. kids love looking out the top of their castle.
  4. Get the Flaps and your 2020 diary or something average reading book size to measure the ramparts and gaps at the top of the castle. I did the middle gap first and that worked quite well for the size of the box.
  5. once you’ve cut out all the ramparts you can stick them to the top of the castle using double sided tape and your little one to hold in place. Then duct tape around the edges so its really secure.
  6. Time to make your flag with one of the cut out pieces of Rampart. Duct tape it to the stick and raise the flag on your castle.
  7. Sit down and have a hot drink while the kids play.

Do you have anything else planned to do?

I made the castle for my daughter’s first birthday that was a couple of days ago. So my next idea was for the cake smash. I used a really simple cake mix and looked up how to ice a cake. it went well! i think its such a fun idea for a kids birthday in lockdown.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Gemma. I have a son Luke who is nearly 3 and daughter, Seren, who was 1 a few days ago during in the lockdown.

We live in Cornwall. We have had a lot of fun during lockdown doing lots of crafts and collecting ideas from pages like housebound with kids and other pages. They have been my saviour during all this. We always went out a lot so i felt it was very important to keep busy.

I do try to do an activity, stroll, film everyday and keep a routine. My kids are so young so they have not really noticed being in. I think i’ve tried to make the most of it as i was due to start back at work after maternity when the lockdown arrived. It has brought me a bit of extra time with my babies. Not every day goes well but this was a good few days. We just stay at home and stayed safe.
