Katie, from Gillingham, Kent, sent in this intricate masking tape road system. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

It’s a road made from masking tape cut and stuck onto the floor. It can be made into any design and cars of most sizes (particularly Hot Wheels in our house) can be driven around on it.

Curved roads are tricky but my son loves roundabouts so we had to give them a go. The thinner road markings were fiddly but they really add to the overall affect of the road. The car parks are a big hit here. And this time we added some Hot Wheels garages into the design which was a big hit with the kids.

Do you have any other projects planned?

I feel like I’ve exhausted most car-based ideas! We’ve built tracks out of cardboard, built cars out of all sorts of materials (bug and small), made pictures using the 100s of cars we have (most popular was a rainbow made of different colour cars). I would quite like to make a car corner with Hot Wheels tracks in the boys’ bedroom – we have some tracks that go on the wall so my son would love to get them set up!

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

I work in a secondary alternative provision school but am able to work from home through lockdown, and look after my 2 boys (5yr old and 1yr old). Both boys play mostly with cars and love all vehicles so we are constantly trying new activities involving their cars.

How are you finding being housebound so far?

It’s hard but amazing to watch them both learning when normally we miss a lot of it as both parents work full time.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Don’t be too hard on yourself or the kids. Be realistic and split the work/play balance when you can. Have a routine and explain each day’s plan to kid beforehand so they know what to expect through the day.
