Katie, from Kent, sent in this great idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

We ordered a round polystyrene wreath and a set of four different sized pom pom makers from Amazon. (Tutorials on how to use the pom pom makers can be found on YouTube).
We bought lots of brightly coloured 100g balls of wool, together with a ball of cream wool for the clouds. (There is plenty of wool left over).
Over the course of several evenings (!) we made lots of small pom poms in the rainbow colours. We then made lots of small, medium and large cream pom poms for the clouds.
When the pom poms were all made, (about 80 in total!) we positioned them onto our wreath to make sure we had enough, and that we were happy with the layout. To make the raindrops, we threaded some blue pom poms onto lengths of blue wool using a large-eyed needle. We secured the pom poms in position using little knots. We then attached each set of raindrops to the wreath by tying them on to the bottom. We also tied a piece of wool to the top of the wreath to use as a hanging loop.
Finally, we secured all of the pom poms onto the wreath using a hot glue gun. (This was my daughter’s favourite part!)

Making the pom poms can be a bit fiddly. My top tips would be to use plenty of wool so the pom poms are nice and full, and get a small sharp pair of scissors to do the snipping.
Make sure you arrange your pom poms on your wreath and you are happy with the layout before you start gluing! Once the hot glue has dried it’s difficult to remove.

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

My name is Katie. I live in Kent with my husband, my five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son.
Since lockdown, I have taken on the homeschooling and childcare responsibilities whilst my husband works from home. It has been challenging, but I love arts and crafts and have really enjoyed getting my daughter involved in my craft projects.

How are you finding being housebound so far?

It’s difficult to juggle homeschooling a five-year-old and entertaining a two-year-old! I find having a routine really helps. We get school work out of the way in the morning, and then do fun activities such as baking, painting etc in the afternoon.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Do whatever you’ve got to do to get through the day! Take each day at a time, some will be good and some will be bad.

Has this website and community helped you?

Some really great ideas to keep us all occupied in lockdown!
